Janitor Charlie loves Edna, the pretty bank secretary, but she, in turn, loves another Charles, the cashier. In The Bank, Charlie dreams he saves Edna from an attack on the bank, but wakes up realising it has all been a dream. This equivocal ending, uncustomary for burlesque films, was to become a key feature for Chaplin.

In this film, one of Chaplin’s best Essanay Comedies, he adapted the plot of the Keystone film The New Janitor, adding a dream scene inspired by the part he played in Karno’s Jimmy the Fearless. In the original sketch, Chaplin played the part of Jimmy, a down-and-out who, in his dreams, becomes a hero. Released on 9 August 1915
