Chaplin hired a boat, the Vaquero, as inspiration for this gem of a comedy. Charlot is hired to shanghai a crew, but finds himself shanghaied, in turn. He must save his sweetheart, a stowaway, before the boat is destroyed in an insurance scam.

In this film, Chaplin dances for one of the first times (dance was to become a major feature of his subsequent films). He also gets seasick (one of his favourite sketches), uses roll and pitch, which he was to immortalise in the The Immigrant (1917), and finds himself in a strange homosexual situation with the cabin boy, in a sequence that was highly unusual for cinema of the period. Released on 4 October 1915
