Chaplin plays dual roles in this film, that of Mr. Pest, an alcoholic he had arleady portrayed on stage, and Mr. Rowdy, a penniless spectator up in the balcony. The two men have come to see the show, but Mr. Pest wreaks havoc in the orchestra stall, while Mr. Rowdy causes mayhem in the gallery.

This comedy owes its origin to the sketch Mumming Birds, which brought Chaplin fame among the Karno Company in his pre-cinema days. In this parody of terrible shows, Chaplin, who plays a rather inebriated drunk, intervenes in increasingly amusing ways.
