It is her life's struggle. Kong Zhenlan, or "Mama Kong" as she is known in her village, has been fighting for years to save the lost children of China's countrysides.

We are in the Shanxi mining basin, to the west of Beijing, where millions of tons of coal are burned every year to supply electricity to the whole country.

Mama Kong's story is the story of China today: the ravages of the headlong rush for development, the persistence of old superstitions regarding disabled children, the absence of social cover in rural areas, and the rigid application of a one-child policy. Whereas coal still supplies 70% of the energy consumed in China, it also poses the burning issue of energy supply in general and alternatives to nuclear power.
