16 months after the revolution and the fall of Hosni Mubarak in February 2011, the Egyptians are preparing to elect their new president democratically on May 23 and 24 in an extremely tense social context, coupled with a catastrophic economic situation.

Far from the hustle and bustle of Cairo, the ARTE Reportage team travelled to the north of the country. Business has hit a very rough patch since the revolution. The tourists and cruise ships have deserted Port Said. And the poor remain very poor. With no rights or social protection, they are experiencing a mixture of anger and weariness. Political allegiance to the forthcoming president does not really matter much to them, as long as insecurity ends and security returns.
