In 1981, Iceland was the first country in the world to elect a woman President of the Republic but this now seems a distant memory.

And yet this small island with a population of 320,000 set an example. For the duration of her 16-year mandate, not only did Vigdis Finnbogadottir pave the way for many other nations, she also contributed to the lasting position of women in Icelandic politics.

Icelandic women are not just extending political boundaries they are also changing social conventions. In April, the Icelandic church elected a woman at its head for the first time - Agnes Sigurdardóttir, a divorced pastor and mother of 3 children. In addition to this, the favourite in the opinion polls for the presidential elections of 30 June is a 37-year old female journalist. In May, when we met her during her campaign, she was expecting a baby. In the event she wins the election, her husband has promised he will resign to look after their six children full time. It looks like Iceland is paving the way once again.
