Up until January 1959, when Fidel Castro took power, gleaming American cars, such as Fords, Chevrolets, Buicks and Plymouths criss-crossed Cuba and its capital Havana. A few years later, the United States imposed a severe trade embargo on the country, which included a ban on foreign vehicle imports.

For decades, Cubans have displayed great ingenuity and resourcefulness in repairing and looking after their "American beauties". Thanks to them, Cuba remains a paradise and veritable open-air museum for lovers old Fords, Studebakers and Chevrolets.
This journey provides the opportunity to observe the poor state of repair the Cuban economy is in, after 53 years of the Castro regime.
