Eugene Richards has devoted the last thirty years to documenting poverty and social exclusion in the USA, where he is seen as one of the most important figures of his generation.

Ex-Magnum photographer Eugene Richards has devoted the last thirty years to documenting poverty and social exclusion in the USA, where he is seen as one of the most important figures of his generation.
Richards has set himself the task of depicting the underside of American society - homelessness, drug addiction and violence. His sombre photographs, in which the composition is broken up by sharp diagonals and violent gestures, and fragmented bodies are seen in desolate settings, hold up an unforgiving mirror to contemporary America.
