Dr Douglas Rodrigues set up Projeto Xingu, a training course given by the Federal University of São Paulo to provide those in the field with the tools to understand Indian customs and beliefs.

Emergency doctor Bernard Fontanille sets out to meet one of his former students, Vânia Rabelo, a 32-year-old nurse. For three years, she has been living among the Kaiabis, in the Xingu river basin, gathering experiences linked to culture shock. "Kaiabis women, for example, do not like the umbilical cord to be cut when a child is born. They think it can damage the child’s health”, she recounts.
