The Kallawaya, itinerant healers of the Andes, live in the mountains of Apolobamba, one of the country’s remotest areas.

As well as being doctors, pharmacists, traders and gatherers, the Kallawaya know how to concoct remedies, and have an unequalled knowledge of Andean plants. They are also said to have supernatural powers. Emergency doctor Bernard Fontanille has an appointment in the village of Chari, one of the strongholds of this culture, with Aurelio, who has an in-depth knowledge of the characteristics of one thousand species. He gets this knowledge from his father, and is teaching it to his son Emilio – a transmission that is carried out in juyai, the secret language of the Kallawaya.
