The inhabitants of Beijing have not had a glimpse of blue sky for several months now. Instead, they are living under a cloak of pollution, in a permanent cloud of micro-particles that hide the sun and clog up their lungs.

China has started to pay the price of chasing growth, and it’s a high price to pay: the environment has been sacrificed on the altar of profit. “Airpocalypse”, as it is now referred to, is perhaps the final straw. The people of Beijing are becoming increasingly intolerant of their living conditions and are starting to mobilise against the persistent pollution. A report from the Chinese capital, where we meet both new dissenters and authorities who are finding it hard to react.
