In India, castes have been impenetrable for centuries. Tacit codes determine people’s social lives as well as their romantic lives. For many, it is unthinkable to marry someone from a different caste or religion. Those who take the risk of doing so can even put their lives at stake.

The only solution for these banished and hounded couples is to dial the emergency number for Love Commandos, a support network present throughout India that protects these forbidden love relationships.
“We already have enough problems in India, without being forbidden to see the man or woman we love!”. Sanjoy Sachdev, one of the founders of Love Commanders, created in 2012, expresses a very common idea in India: that of being able to marry the man or woman you love. In certain rural regions of India, the decision does not belong to the lovers themselves but to their families and their communities. Marriages are arranged. And in the event of an infraction, they are killed, leading to 1,000 such crimes of honour every year. In order to survive, the lovers are forced to flee, fearing for their lives. Love Commandos combats an outdated social pact and questions a system that is centuries old. Arte Reportage went to meet them.
