Not so long ago, Amina had never seen a computer. Today, the Bangladeshi village-dweller chats to her expatriate brother every day via Skype. The operation has been made possible by the “Info Lady” project, created 3 years ago by a local NGO called D.Net.

About a hundred “Info Ladies” cycle everyday to the remotest villages, bringing an Internet connection to tens of thousands of people, mainly women. This is a precious service in a country in which only 5 million of the 152 million inhabitants have access to the Internet. After a 3-month training period, the “Info Ladies” teach the inhabitants of the villages to use a computer, a printer and a camera. The project is furthering the emancipation of women in a conservative country where prejudices die hard. The Info Ladies broadcast public health messages in remote areas and for 10 takas (9 euro cents), they help students register at university via the Internet.
