The anti-government demonstrations that have been rocking the country since late May are showing no signs of a let-up.
ARTE Reportage visited Taksim Square in Istanbul, among the anti-riot police and barricades, to meet 2 students with opposing ideas, Mehmet and Tugce.
Mehmet is a young militant with the JDP party (AKP in Turkish) – the Justice and Development Party (the AKP in Turkish). He is a fervent supporter of the conservative policies and tough actions of Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan. As for Tugce, she defends women’s rights, sexual equality and secular values.
2 contrasted visions, reflecting the reality of a country with a host of nuances, that is open onto the world, and in which veils exist alongside skirts, and the secular exists alongside the religious.
