With 5 million inhabitants for 700 km2, farmland in Singapore may be a rarity but imagination has reached an all-time high.

The mega city of Singapore’s first vertical farm has opened, designed and developed by the company Sky Greens. This new way of growing vegetables claims to be totally ecological and could extend beyond the borders of the city-state. With its 120 aluminium towers, the vertical farm spans 3.6 hectares and yields 10 times more than horizontal crops.

Salads, cabbages, carrots, tomatoes and even rice are grown there – all organically. Sold at higher prices than imported vegetables, those bearing the Sky Greens label are enjoying great success.
