For Westerners, the figure of the Samurai is the very symbol of Japan, a reference that immediately springs to mind when one mentions the Empire of the Rising Sun.

The Samurai first appeared in the 12th century, at the start of the Japanese Middle Ages, and carved out a legend through their art of combat, based on martial arts and the handling of the Katana, a curved sabre with a razor-sharp blade. But what do we really know about them. Are they brave warriors, influenced by legendary ethics, or mercenaries, who remain faithful to their fierce and bloodthirsty clans? Philippe Charlier accompanies us on the traces of these warlords who shaped the history of Japan for seven centuries.
