A portrayal of a mysterious artist who is as flamboyant as he is evasive, who combines a love for the limelight with a yearning for the shadows, and who embodies the fascination Hollywood holds.

From his first major movie role (Splendour in the Grass, 1961) to his latest film to date (Bulworth, 1998), Warren Beatty has actively courted and fled from the limelight with equal zeal. This actor-producer-screenwriter, and finally Oscar-winning director, who is the irresistible embodiment of the American male - and a man of many women - epitomises Hollywood’s genius, candour and excesses. At the age of 30, thanks to Bonnie and Clyde, he became a prince in the movie kingdom he so passionately wanted to conquer. He then used the same tenacity to set about ridding himself of the dictates of Hollywood, taking refuge in silence and turning down projects and roles. His flamboyant career is an illustration of this ambivalence: in the year 2000, this man of left-wing ideals enthusiastically launched a brief presidential campaign only to abandon it suddenly, providing no explanation of why, other than his desire to be elsewhere. A colourful portrait composed of archive images and animation sequences, spanning 40 years of cinema, between modernity and nostalgia.
