Soviet archives house the only filmed memories of the Holocaust. Taken on the fly, these images represent reality. But what reality? Best Director Award at the Jewish Film Festival (2015).

The images of war from the period were inspired by a cinematographic tradition of aestheticism, but were also dependent on political considerations. This strategy of “war-by-image” creates a black hole: the identity of the victims. The Jews are forgotten. Mentioning the Jews goes against the idea of a Great Patriotic War. Examining the images recorded during this dark period means looking anew at what was not filmed, but also at the messages transmitted and the arrangements made with the truth. Do “images-as-truth” lie?
