On a small canal that snakes through the Spreewald - a part of Brandenburg made up of forests, marshes and canals - François listens to the legendary history of the place, told by Wolfgang the boatman.

Here, he discovers the Sorbs, a minority from Eastern Europe, who invite him to celebrate Saint John’s Day according to their tradition: on horseback in a joyous cavalcade. Near Cottbus, Gehrart a farmer, shows him another local tradition, in the form of the gherkin, which is cultivated along the canals and exported all over Germany. In Straupitz, François visits Gerd’s old mill. Gerd is Germany’s last flax oil producers. His trip ends in a boat with Andrea, a postwoman, who carries out her very romantic round on water.
