Ladakh in northwestern India is a region marked by extremes. At an altitude between 2,500 and almost 7,700 meters (8,200 to over 25,000 feet) frigid temperatures can dominate for months at a time. There is scarcely any precipitation. Ladakh is a mountainous desert with little vegetation.
