Belgium is a paradox: Europe’s former battlefield, and a country often threatened with annexation, its capital now lies at the heart of the European institutions. With Caroline Lamarche, Tom Lanoye, David Van Reubrouck et Jean-Philippe Toussaint.

Today, the country is marked by a temptation towards separatism, divided between linguistic communities. Against this backdrop, is there a Belgian literature that echoes the authors of the country’s various languages? Four Belgian writers enlighten us.
They take us from the beaches of the North Sea, to the steel producing areas of the Liege basin, to Antwerp’s diamond district. Over and above what separates them, they all share a desire to open dialogue and to sketch a common future for their country.
