Weta are endemic to the islands of New Zealand. Some weta are among the world’s largest and heaviest insects, and scientists consider them to be an ancient species, given that fossils of similar creatures - that lived 180 to 190 million years ago - have been found in Queensland.

Guillaume Mazille has organised a trek, deep in weta territory, complete with tent and backpack, and in the company of Graham, a passionate naturalist. They are forced to adapt their journey by moving to higher ground, to the lofty windswept plateaus, in order to deal with a certain invasive, predatory species. Their journey provides an opportunity to witness the outstanding landscapes of this mountainous region of New Zealand.
