To reach its second Senegalese port of call, the Nomade des mers noses down a sound, past coastal mangroves. Corentin and his crew are heading for Toubacouta, a small village where an NGO called Nébéday makes eco-friendly charcoal from agricultural by-products such as straw.

This cheap, readily available alternative to traditional charcoal is an effective means of stemming deforestation, and the women of Toubacouta have formed a cooperative to produce and sell straw charcoal in the surrounding area. Along with Jean Goepp, the founder of Nébéday, the Nomads help the women harvest and carbonize straw. They want to find a greener and more energy-efficient cooking process, and the idea is to make themselves a burner that will take straw charcoal.
