« Little Tibet », as it is known, is a high altitude desert. The Changtang plateau is surrounded by peaks of over 6,000 metres. Peasants and craftsmen live here in oases along streams that descend from the glaciers and irrigate their fields.

The expanse of ice in the Himalayas has shrunk by 21% since 1962. One retired engineer has had a simple and quite natural idea : he has diverted a stream, to create pools, with stone dykes and fords to control the flow. The mountain water freezes in the pools. In March, it melts and irrigates the crops.
