When Asia and Africa separated some 25 million years ago, the Arabian peninsula appeared. With altitudes of up to 3,700 metres, Yemen is a steep and rugged land.

The country’s 120,000 villages, often perched on mountain crests, have long been refuges for the inhabitants. Hardened by endless invasions through the centuries, these mountain folk learned to become feared warriors. The construction techniques date back to the 12th century BC, and have enabled the superb houses to cling to the mountain slopes for hundreds of years. In spring and in summer, the monsoon strikes a small part of Yemen. The province of Ibb is like an oasis in this generally arid region.
