Cranes are considered to bring good luck. Every year in October, they arrive in droves to spend the winter in the Phobjikha Valley.
People in Bhutan say that the cranes are attracted to sacred places. The Phobjikha Valley, located in a sheltered inland region, is one such sacred place. As the area’s soil almost never freezes, the migratory birds find food there, even during the winter months. From mid-October, the inhabitants eagerly await their arrival from Tibet.
