At the foot of the Roncevaux pass, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is a key crossing point in the Pyrenees between France and Spain.

The former kingdom of Navarre once extended this far. Henry IV, and his successor, Louis XIII, fortified the village. It become a stopping-point on the Way of Saint James, a defensive stronghold, a market town, and a destination for royal visitors. This well-guarded frontier town saw many conflicts and battles, including the legendary exploits of Roland de Roncevaux.
