The Luberon is a land that has known cultural mixing, conflict, heresy and resistance. The village of Gordes, a provencal jewel, still bears testimony to this rich past.

The village has retained its medieval look : a labyrinth of dry stones hanging on to a rocky outcrop in the Vaucluse mountains around a castle. A maze of small streets, known as ‘cadales’ weaves between houses built into the rock itself. Not far away is the Les Bories site, which embodies 3,000 years of history. The dry stone constructions, with sheepfolds, bread ovens, wine stores, granaries, streets and enclosures form an exemplary model of integration with the environment. Classified as an historic monument in 1977, the village forms the largest such group of dry-stone dwellings.
