The history of this small medieval village in the Drôme department is intimately linked to that of Saint Anthony of Egypt. His remains were brought back from the Orient during the Crusades, and they were said to be able to cure various diseases known as ‘St Anthony’s fire’.

The abbey-church was built between the 13th and 15th centuries, and is considered to be one of the finest examples of gothic architecture in South-Eastern France. Since the 12th century, Hospitaliers here have welcomed pilgrims and patients, and organised the first civil hospitals.
