The first human beings appeared in Ethiopia, over 3 million years ago. Today, the country’s population, which is predominantly Christian, is spread over nine States and speaks over 70 languages. They are the only African people never to have been colonised.

Salt, the country’s “white gold”, has always been used as a currency of exchange in Ethiopian markets. It is sold in slabs or by weight, and is collected in the Danakil, Africa’s largest salt desert, bordered by high plateaux.
