The market town of Sana’a is perched at an altitude of 2,300 metres. All Yemenis without exception consume Khat - euphoria-inducing leaves that only grow in mountain areas.

Sana’a has always been the point of passage for caravans travelling to the north from the port of Aden in the south. The houses of the village of Aldjara, built in sandstone or basalt, have lasted through the centuries. The technique used to build them dates back to the 12th century B.C.
