After years of deforestation, the forest of North Vietnam is undergoing a rebirth. The State has given local inhabitants plots of land that they must protect and maintain.

The white Dao live in West Babé, by Thac Ba Lake. They are both farmers and fishermen. They use curious pedalo-type boats that leave their hands free to do the work. They communicate with spirits. The women weave their own clothes and paint their teeth black, as a sign of beauty.
