For three centuries, the Chaga people have settled around the mountain. Reverend Loveland knows these people well.

He was born here, at the foot of Kilimanjaro. His mother is 90 years old. She remembers when the Chaga people embraced other traditions, well before the region was evangelised. For former Chaga people, Kilimanjaro was God in person. They believed God himself was present on Kilimanjaro. They thought that when Kilimanjaro was visible, God was happy, and when clouds obscured its sight, there was a problem.
