In the heart of the Vosges, water, stone, forest and peat bog drew the landscape of the ‘Thousand Ponds’ plateau.

From the 11th Century, monks built these artificial lakes. Then, throughout the years, they are little by little abandoned: basins are filled, and the landscape is withdrawing into itself.
If man, by setting himself in these landscapes, redefined their shape, another phenomenon contributed to change the plateau: the forest’s extension. In the middle of the 19th century, 15% of the lands were wooded in France. Today, it is five times more. New balances are taking place… In these humid areas, we can find specific ecosystems which are very carefully protected. The Thousand ponds’ plateau has been classified “Natura 2000” area, a European network of natural environment well furnished in biodiversity.
