This mountain is world-wide known, it entered in the museums of the biggest cities. However, this limestone mountain has nothing really impressive and its peak is only a few inches more than 1000 meters. Its reputation is only due to the obsession of one artist: Paul Cézanne.

A few kilometers away from Aix en Provence, Bibémus’ quarry was next to Emile Zola’s house, one of the artist’s friends from junior high school. This area was their playground: scenery of canyons, offering a striking contrast between the red color of the clay and the white one of the quarry. Then, in 1895, the painter rented a small house on the west side of the Saint-Victory Mountain, near the Tholonet. 87 paintings will immortalize the Saint-Victory. In Cézanne’s paintings, we can also guess the presence of men if the fields that covered the sides of the mountain. Today, exactly at the same place, this small valley of 140 hectares has become a classified area, Natural Reserve.
