The archipelago of Madeira, or “wood” in Portuguese, is made up of four islands. The main island, which is a series of volcanic peaks, emerged from the depths of the ocean several million years ago, and in 1419 Portuguese navigators and the first settlers officially took possession of it.

The island became a veritable farming laboratory for the kingdom’s colonies. The Portuguese grew sugar cane there before subsequently planting it in Brazil and then in Africa. Mangoes and avocadoes were also cultivated there, and today, vines are also grown.
