The territory of the Alpujarra is shared between the Andalusian provinces of Granada and Almeria, to the South of the Sierra Nevada.

The name of the landscape comes from Al Busherat, meaning “land of the pastures” in Arabic. UNESCO granted the mountain range “Biosphere Reserve” status in 1996. Here, between the snow-covered mountains, reaching altitudes of 3,500 metres and the arid plains that stretch out at their feet, there is a stark contrast in climate. A system of canals irrigates orchards that are grown in terraces, a savoir-faire inherited from the Arabs of Al-Andalus.
