The Netherlands houses one of Europe’s highest population densities. If the numerous dykes and drainage canals had not been built in the country, a large part of it would today be under water. These buildings constructed on the sea and on inland lakes protect Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam.

In Dutch, the world “polder” means “restrained lands”. Over the centuries, the Netherlands has perfected the technique in response to an ever increasing population. The tulip, which is exported all over the world, is the Netherlands’ flagship product. It is partly thanks to the polders that tulips can be grown so abundantly.
