On the Emerald Coast, between Cancale and Cap Fréhel, Saint Malo and the Rance estuary form part of the local landscape, which changes according to the tides.

Saint-Malo is a sea-faring city, and also a guard-post. Relentlessly sought by the British, the town was progressively fortified. At the end of the 17th century, Louis 14th sent Vauban there, to organise defence strategies against England. The tides are constantly altering the landscape, and are good for oyster farming.
