The Domaine de Chantilly is located 40 kilometres outside Paris. It first served as a fortified residence, and was built in the 14th century to protect the Paris-Creil route, where Charles V’s castle was located.

During the 17th century, Louis 14th’s cousin, the “Grand Condé” asked Le Nôtre to plan the estate’s beautiful gardens. Louis II de Bourbon Condé, known as “le Grand Condé”, attracted a literary following to the castle, including names such as La Fontaine, Molière, La Bruyère and Madame de Sévigné. Le Nôtre dedicated a “philosopher’s alley” to them.
