The current Bois de Vincennes is a vestige of the forestland that surrounded Lutetia, and from the 11th century onwards was the hunting territory of the kings of France.

Today it stretches for over 900 hectares. Vincennes castle, a fortified royal residence, was built between the 14th and 17th centuries to house and protect the kings of France. They looked after the Bois de Vincennes and had oak trees planted there. It was Napoleon 3rd who made plans for the current layout of the woods as a leisure park. The emperor wanted to offer a place to stroll around to those he referred to as “the working-class of Eastern Paris”.
