Malta was a stronghold of the Christian world in the struggle against the Ottomans. The buildings in the capital Valletta are made of globigerina, a honey-coloured stone.

The capital owes its name to Jean Parisot de la Vallette, one of the Grand Masters of the Knights of Malta. Charles V gave the Knights the island in 1530. In 1798, General Bonaparte conquered Malta, but in 1800, the British annexed the island to the British Empire.
On the Maltese islands, there are some 50 megalithic sites, all close to a source of water and with access to the sea. In Gozo, natural saltpans are used for the collection of sea salt.
