In the middle of an arid landscape in the SouthEast of the Iberian Peninsula, there is an astonishing urban oasis of 200,000 date palm trees, planted in the middle of the city of Elche.

The Carthaginians were the first to plant the date palm trees there. Thanks to the irrigation expertise of the Arabs, the palm grove underwent rapid development in the 8th century. Over the centuries, generations of peasants have transformed this arid region into a small paradise. Today, although date production no longer constitutes the core of the local economy, the palm trees and the irrigation canals are carefully maintained, in order to preserve the beauty and originality of the landscape.
