In North-West Italy, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the region of Cinque Terre “The Five Villages” spans barely 10 kilometres. Man has inhabited this strip of rugged coastline for a thousand years.

Vines were first planted there in the 11th century. They grow in terraces facing the sea, and the unique taste of the wine they produce comes from a combination of the iodine-rich air and the sun. The way the vines are cultivated has barely evolved in Cinque Terre over the centuries, because work on the mountainside plots cannot be mechanised. Yet a handful of winegrowers are intent on maintaining the magnificent traditional landscape. Locals refer to it as “heroic winemaking”.
