It is hard to imagine that the landscapes of Cornwall, which are so peaceful today, were home to intensive industrial and mining activity in the 19th century. At the time, it was the richest region in England.

At the start of the Industrial Revolution, tin was used to make tin-plate before being replaced by copper. The King Edward Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of Cornwall’s best preserved mines. The vestiges of the area’s industrial past are still visible, notably the factory chimneys. Still today, kaolin is extracted to produce the famous “China Clay”, which is among the most beautiful and finest in the world.
