The Val d’Orcia is typical of the Tuscan landscape with its cypress-lined roads, its hills and its medieval villages.

A famous fresco by the painter Ambrogio Lorenzetti illustrates the principles of “Good Government” practiced by the Republic of Siena in the 14th century that have shaped the landscape. The commune of Corsignano was renamed Pienza, after Pope Pius II, who was born there. He transformed the village into an “ideal town”, founded on humanist philosophical principles, and on harmony between Man and his environment.
