The water here is barely 15°, and the wind will rattle your teeth, but Skagen can boast Europe’s second largest dune (after Pyla, at Arcachon in France), and, above all, the light is breathtaking, and has inspired the painters who gave rise to Denmark’s great impressionist movement.

Skagen also attracts lovers of amber, which abounds on the beach, and birdwatchers, who come to observe mass migrations, as well as the Danish jet-set, who have made the small port here the Saint Tropez of the North. It is the only place in the world where you can put one foot in one sea (the Baltic) and the other in another, (the North Sea).
