Knokke is a community made up of several coastal villages, brought together in the early 1970s. The beach, or beaches, stretch over some 10 kilometres or so, culminating in the Zwin nature reserve.

With its smart villas, casino and golf course, the resort is a microscosm of wealthy Belgian society. Visitors traditionally meet up, to see and be seen, in the Place Albert, or go shopping in the classy boutiques that line the main avenue… But Knokke is also a centre for Surrealism. Man Ray, Picasso, Dali and Ernst all spent time here, and exhibitions of their work are organised regularly. Frescoes by René Magritte and Paul Delvaux decorate the casino walls.
