Since the EU-Turkey agreement has come into force, migrants who have arrived on the Greek islands are being held, whilst waiting to send them back to Turkey.

Tension is growing in the Aegean Sea. Clashes between migrants are on the increase in the camp on the Island of Chios, an immigration detention centre built for 1,200 people where over 1,500 refugees are piled in. Some migrants have taken part in demonstrations, demanding their freedom of movement. In the rest of the country, the situation of refugees subsisting in tents in the vast port of Piraeus or living in terrible conditions in Idomeni, on the Macedonian border, continues to cause outrage among NGOs, who denounce the EU’s indifference to the fate of thousands of human lives. Since the EU-Turkey agreement, inflow to the Greek islands has decreased, but hundreds of people are still arriving. After the closure of the Balkans route in late February, it is estimated that some 50,000 exiles, not subject to the EU-Turkey agreement, are blocked in Greece.
