In Ton Pheung district, people speak fluent Mandarin, all clocks are set to Beijing time and the Yaun is the common currency.

Yet the district is in Laos. In the space of a few years, Chinese investors have built casinos and hotel complexes there, and have imported their way of life. And this enclave in Laotian territory is far from being an isolated case. Regions in north Laos are gradually taking on the appearance of Chinese colonies. Tourism, transport, real estate, energy, agriculture - with the blessing of the Laos government, the “Middle Kingdom” has decided to exploit the riches of South-East Asia’s poorest country. The consequences of this unbridled capitalism, which include expropriations, deforestation and pollution, are proving disastrous for the local populations.
